Albino rabbits were used in the animal experiments and they were maintained on "Okara"•õ (300 g. daily). During the salt period sodium chloride was added to this and water intake was allowed ad libitum. In the human experiments a daily ascorbic acid intake was kept as constant as possible. The basal metabolic rate was measured by the Douglas Bags method. Total ascorbic acid content was determined on the rabbit's blood and human plasma by the 2-6 Dichlorophenol-indophenol method after Fujita (1). The maximum deviation in 10 determinations was about 4 per cent. Urine was collected in a bottle with 20 per cent meta-phosphoric acid for analysis of urinary ascorbic acid.
